Modernization of the Russian army

According to TSN.ua: Russia continues to modernize its army, including the use of the new drone 'Geran-4', which is equipped with the air-to-air R-60 missile. This new technology creates additional threats to Ukrainian pilots, as the reactive model of the drone demonstrates higher speed compared to previous versions. The Ukrainian defense forces have already successfully shot down this drone; however, the use of the R-60 missile increases the risks for air defense systems.

Characteristics of drones and missiles

The 'Geran-4' drone has a speed that ranges from 350 to 500 km/h, significantly exceeding the speed of the propeller drone 'Shahed', which is about 180 km/h. This change in speed can complicate the detection and interception of drones by air defense, increasing the overall threat level to Ukraine's airspace.

The R-60 missile used by 'Geran-4' has a launch range of 7 to 8 km and a narrow field of view for the guidance head, which is only 24-34 degrees. This means that precise targeting is necessary for effectively hitting drone targets, which can also impact air combat strategies. In Ukraine, Russia also uses the new Shahed-107 drone, which is a simplified version of the Shahed-136.

Given these factors, the use of mesh modems for coordinating attacks becomes a key element in the strategy of Russian military forces. The integration of cutting-edge technologies into the 'Geran-4' drone and R-60 missiles indicates ongoing development and adaptation of tactical means, making the situation in Ukraine's airspace even more tense.

The situation with the modernization of Russian drones and their armaments underscores the need for continuous improvement of Ukraine's air defense system. Increasing threats from the air require adaptation of tactics and technologies, as well as the active implementation of new means to protect the territory. This may influence the further development of military actions and strategies of both sides of the conflict.
