Russian Drones Using Starlink Pose New Threat to Ukrainian Rear Areas
According to TSN.ua: Russian forces are now employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with Starlink satellite systems, creating a significant new threat to Ukraine's logistical and support infrastructure. According to Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to Ukraine's Minister of Defense, newer, heavier drone platforms like the BM-35 UAV can travel distances of up to 500 km. This extended range provides Russian military units with enhanced capabilities for conducting long-distance strikes on Ukrainian targets deep behind the front lines.
One aspect of Russia's drone modernization involves reducing the number of kamikaze-style drones while simultaneously upgrading their technological sophistication. For instance, the Russian army has fitted a jet-powered version of the 'Shahed' drone, known as the 'Geran-4', with an R-60 air-to-air missile. This development indicates Moscow's ongoing efforts to boost the effectiveness of its UAV fleet by integrating more advanced weaponry and systems.
Furthermore, a new drone model, the Shahed-107, has emerged in Russia as a simplified variant of the Shahed-136. These changes to the Russian drone arsenal could pose a serious challenge to Ukrainian forces, as the Russians are now capable of controlling 'Shahed' drones via real-time online links, granting them greater operational flexibility for tactical maneuvers. The integration of commercial satellite internet like Starlink is a key factor enabling this more direct, long-range control.
Securing Ukrainian Territory Against Starlink Exploitation
In response to these evolving threats, Serhiy Beskrestnov emphasized the critical importance of securing Ukraine's territory against the unauthorized use of these communication systems, stating:
“Only our Starlink terminals should be operational on our territory.” - Serhiy Beskrestnov
Implementing administrative controls and blocking roaming access for unauthorized terminals could become crucial steps in mitigating the risks associated with the enemy's exploitation of this technology.
Experts analyzing the scaling threat note that from 'Molniya' drones to fuel-powered UAVs, new technologies could substantially alter the dynamics of the air war. It is vital to recognize that advancements in Russian drone capabilities demand that Ukraine responds with agility and speed in implementing corresponding security and countermeasures.
These developments underscore the imperative for the Ukrainian military to continuously adapt to the novel challenges posed by technological progress within the enemy's arsenal. The increasing effectiveness of Russian drones may lead to new strategic dangers, requiring Ukraine not only to enhance its air defense systems but also to actively work on securing its communications and technological landscape. Such proactive measures could significantly influence the conflict's trajectory and the nation's overall security.
