Massive Russian Barrage: 420 Drones and 39 Missiles Strike Ukraine in 24 Hours.
Russia's Major Assault on Ukraine, February 26, 2023
According to Novyny.live: On February 26, 2023, Russia launched a large-scale attack against Ukraine, targeting critical infrastructure and residential buildings. The assault involved the launch of 420 unmanned aerial vehicles, the majority of which were Iranian-made 'Shahed' drones. In addition, 39 missiles of various types were fired, including 11 ballistic missiles. The resulting destruction was recorded across eight Ukrainian regions, inflicting severe consequences on the civilian population.
Initial reports indicated dozens of wounded, including children. Gas infrastructure in the Poltava region was damaged, along with electrical substations in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Emergency services were deployed in the Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, and Kyiv regions, as well as in the capital itself, where explosions were heard in Kyiv and its surrounding area. The city of Zaporizhzhia experienced extensive destruction and fires, significantly worsening the overall situation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated: 'Most of the missiles launched today were successfully intercepted thanks to our partners promptly delivering some of the air defense missiles agreed upon during the last Ramstein meeting. Unfortunately, there were also impacts. This means we must work even more actively. The cold has not fully receded, and we need air defense missiles every single day while Russia attempts to destroy our energy system. I thank everyone who understands this and is helping.'
Impact on the Energy Sector
This attack represents one of Russia's many attempts to inflict damage on Ukraine, specifically targeting its critical energy infrastructure. This ongoing campaign against power generation and distribution is a central element of Russia's war strategy, aiming to cripple the country during winter. Despite significant efforts by international partners to supply air defense systems, the situation remains tense, and the need for additional support is increasingly urgent.
The widespread damage to infrastructure across multiple regions underscores the critical importance of rapid emergency response and reconstruction efforts. It also highlights the continued necessity for international coordination in security matters and the protection of civilians from such indiscriminate attacks.
