Russia's Evolving Air Attack Strategy
According to TSN.ua: Russia is refining its aerial assault tactics by deploying strike-capable First-Person View (FPV) drones from a larger unmanned carrier aircraft known as the 'Gerbera'. This new method allows munitions to be delivered deep into Ukrainian territory, significantly increasing the potential effectiveness of these operations. The tactic represents a shift towards more complex, layered drone warfare.
The 'Gerbera' drone is central to this strategy. With a weight of approximately 18 kg and a wingspan of 2.4 meters, it provides the necessary stability and maneuverability for its role. The carrier drone has an operational range of up to 640 km, enabling strikes far behind the front lines. At a cost of around $2,000 per unit, the 'Gerbera' is a relatively affordable platform for widespread military use.
New Technologies in Combat
The use of this technology was confirmed on February 3, 2024, when a downed 'Gerbera' equipped with an FPV drone mounting bracket was recovered. Subsequently, on February 9, 2024, video footage surfaced online showing an FPV drone being launched from a carrier aircraft in mid-flight, generating considerable interest among military analysts. FPV drones are known for their precision and are particularly effective against high-value targets.
Military experts note that FPV drones are highly effective for striking:
- radar stations
- anti-aircraft missile systems
- fuel depots
- expensive armored vehicles
Consequently, developing effective countermeasures has become a priority. A key defensive method involves:
- destroying the carrier drone before it can release its payload, which would substantially reduce the threat to ground forces.
Russia's adaptation in using combined drone systems highlights the rapid evolution of modern battlefield technology and its potential impact on the conflict in Ukraine. These new attack methods compel Ukrainian forces to continuously adapt and enhance their defensive strategies.
