Russian Forces Strike Ukrainian Civilians in Hundreds of Attacks Across Four Regions.
Attacks on Ukrainian Civilians on February 27, 2023
According to UATV: On February 27, 2023, Russian military forces continued their assault on Ukrainian civilians, launching strikes against the regions of Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Sumy. These attacks resulted in civilian casualties, including children, and caused significant damage to residential buildings and critical infrastructure. According to Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, occupying forces carried out 729 strikes against 37 settlements in Zaporizhzhia Oblast over a 24-hour period.
In the city of Zaporizhzhia, a drone attack wounded 17 people, one of whom was a teenager. Across Zaporizhzhia Oblast, authorities recorded 694 reports of damage to homes, vehicles, and infrastructure. The severe consequences of the shelling extended to other regions as well:
- In the Kupiansk district of Kharkiv Oblast, a drone attack killed one man and injured a woman.
- In Odesa Oblast, shelling wounded two people, one of them a child.
In central Sumy, Russian troops targeted a hotel with an attack; however, initial reports indicated no casualties. It is important to note that on the night of February 26, Russian forces launched 18 attack drones and two 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles at Kharkiv. As reported by Ukraine's State Emergency Service, the strike destroyed a separate structure on the grounds of a kindergarten, igniting a fire that rescue services promptly extinguished. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of strikes on civilian areas that has characterized the full-scale invasion.
Conflict Escalation and Its Consequences
Consequently, the ongoing Russian military bombardment continues to inflict harm on Ukraine's civilian population, leading to further loss of life and the destruction of vital infrastructure.
These events underscore the continued escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, where civilians are once again bearing the brunt of military actions.
The worsening situation in regions like Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Odesa jeopardizes civilian safety and hinders the recovery of infrastructure already devastated by months of war. Sustained international attention and support for Ukraine remain critically important as it endures this brutal assault on its cities and people.
