Russia's New Attack Priorities

According to UATV: Russian military forces have altered their strategic priorities for strikes within Ukraine, now concentrating on logistics targets, specifically railway networks and water infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the primary objectives of recent Russian attacks are facilities supporting supply chains. In a combined assault on the night of February 22, the Russian army targeted critical Ukrainian infrastructure. This shift represents a move away from primarily targeting energy grids, aiming instead to cripple transportation and essential services.

According to analysis from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian troops have re-prioritized their strike targets to focus on logistical assets. The Ukrainian Air Force reported significant success in countering these attacks, stating they intercepted 274 drones and 33 missiles. Specifically, all 'Iskander-K' and Kh-59/69 cruise missiles were destroyed, along with all Kh-101 cruise missiles except for one.

Impact on Infrastructure and the Economy

This tactical change by Russian forces indicates an intensification of efforts to damage Ukraine's key infrastructure, which could significantly impact the country's wartime operations and civilian life. Strikes on railways and water systems are classic tactics to disrupt military logistics and erode civilian morale.

The Russian focus on logistical targets may point to attempts to destabilize the Ukrainian economy and military supply lines. However, the successes of the Ukrainian Air Force in repelling these attacks also demonstrate the country's preparedness to defend its critical infrastructure, potentially reducing the long-term effectiveness of Russia's latest strategy.
