Russian Drone Strike on Kharkiv Passenger Train Kills Five.
Civilian Casualties in Train Attack
According to UATV: On January 27, 2023, Russian military forces struck a passenger train in the Kharkiv region, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to two others. The incident occurred near the village of Yazykove in the Izium district. The train, traveling the route 'Chop — Kharkiv — Barvinkove,' was carrying over 200 passengers at the time. This attack is part of a pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure that has characterized the ongoing conflict.
The assault was carried out by three unmanned aerial vehicles. One of the drones hit a carriage containing 18 people. Tragically, five individuals were killed and two were wounded. The event provoked widespread outrage and condemnation.
Response from Ukraine's President
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the event, stating,
“There is and can be no military objective in destroying civilians in a train carriage”and emphasized that
“the Russians have significantly increased their capability to kill, their capability to terrorize.”These remarks reflect profound concern for the safety of non-combatants during the war.
This incident underscores the escalating threat to Ukraine's civilian population as the war continues, with attacks on non-military targets becoming increasingly frequent. President Zelenskyy's reaction highlights the gravity of the situation and the necessity for international condemnation of such unjustifiable actions within an armed conflict. It is critical for the global community to remain vigilant and continue supporting Ukraine in its struggle for the security and peace of its citizens.
