Russian Intelligence Activities Across Europe

According to UATV: Russian intelligence services are actively working within Europe to slow down Ukraine’s path to European Union membership. According to Oleh Lysnyi, head of the analytical center 'Polityka,' Moscow is leveraging political and civic groups to create regional instability. Rather than staging overt actions like flag-waving protests, Russian agents operate quietly inside the EU to avoid public backlash.

Lysnyi emphasizes that

“the Russians work with what is already inside the European Union”
, revealing their covert approach. Their goal is to remain under the radar and prevent any public outcry. He adds that whenever tensions arise between EU member states, it plays directly into Moscow’s hands:
“if there are issues that can pit two countries against each other — that’s perfect. Their main objective is to generate and intensify chaos across Europe, tearing apart unity”
.

Ukraine’s Role in Regional Stability

The expert also highlights Ukraine’s central place in Russian imperial ambitions:

“everyone understands, even the ideologues of Russian nationalism and imperialism, that without Ukraine there is no ‘empire’”
. This underscores how Ukraine’s integration into European institutions is a crucial factor for long-term stability in the region.

In light of these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently held a phone call with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. This dialogue underscores the importance of sustained international backing for Ukraine as it resists external pressure.

Russian intelligence operations in Europe pose a serious threat not only to Ukraine’s EU accession but also to the cohesion of the European Union itself.

These events highlight the critical need for international unity in the face of Russian aggression. Ongoing cooperation between Ukraine and EU nations—exemplified by talks like the one between Zelenskyy and Stubb—can strengthen Ukraine’s global standing. Continued active diplomacy and support from European allies are essential to counter Russia’s destabilizing efforts in the region.
