Russian Forces Deport 19 Residents from Sopyche, Cutting All Contact.
Ukrainians Abducted in Sumy Region
According to Novyny.live: Russian military personnel have forcibly deported 19 residents from the village of Sopyche in the Sumy region to Russian territory. All contact with these individuals has since been lost, causing deep distress among their families and the local community. This incident is part of a broader pattern of forced transfers, a tactic widely condemned by international human rights organizations. Notably, these individuals had previously refused evacuation and signed statements to that effect.
According to reports, the abducted residents from Sopyche, a village of roughly 300 people, later appeared in a segment on the Russian propaganda channel 'Vesti'. Their appearance has provoked outrage, as they were exploited for an information manipulation campaign.
A Pattern of Systematic Human Rights Abuses
Like many other settlements in the region, Sopyche has seen a significant population decline due to the war. These forced deportations appear systematic, as evidenced by the abduction of 50 residents from the neighboring village of Hrabovske in December 2025.
In a related incident, the Russian army shelled the Sumy region on March 5, resulting in several civilian casualties. In response to these events, Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's human rights commissioner, has urgently appealed to the Russian side. He demands immediate access to the abducted citizens, information on their health and detention conditions, and their swift return home.
'I have urgently appealed to the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation with a demand to organize an immediate visit to these Ukrainian citizens, to inform me of their health status and conditions of detention following such a visit, and, most importantly, to ensure their prompt return home.' Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights
The situation surrounding the abduction of residents from Sopyche and other Sumy region villages is a cause for grave international concern. It underscores a pattern of systematic human rights violations by Russian forces that demands a coordinated global response. Resolving these cases is a critical step toward ensuring the rights and safety of Ukrainian civilians in conflict-affected areas.
