Russia’s Offensive Fails: 619 Assaults in Four Days Yield Over 6,000 Casualties.
Escalation of Russian Offensive Operations
According to TSN.ua: Between March 17 and 20, 2026, Russian forces intensified their offensive efforts, attempting to breach Ukrainian defenses. Despite committing significant reserves and resources, the aggressor suffered heavy losses and failed to achieve its objectives. Over the four-day period, Russian troops conducted 619 assault operations, including:
- 163 attacks in the Pokrovsk sector;
- 96 in the Oleksandrivsk sector;
- 84 in the Kostiantynivka sector.
Additionally, more than 150 combat engagements were recorded in the Ocheretyne, Lyman, and Kupiansk areas.
Russian Losses and Ukrainian Successes
The scale of Russian military casualties during these operations is staggering: over 6,090 personnel killed or wounded in just four days. For the entire week, the aggressor’s total losses reached approximately 8,710. Ukrainian commanders noted that despite immense pressure, the Russian leadership could not accomplish its goals. As General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated,
“Despite colossal pressure and the deployment of significant reserves, the Russian command was unable to complete its assigned tasks.”
Thanks to the professional and coordinated actions of Ukrainian troops, the enemy’s offensive was halted on multiple fronts. The shift to an 'active defense' strategy allowed Ukrainian forces to hold their positions and prevent further breakthroughs. This situation underscores the resilience of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the face of aggressive enemy actions.
These events highlight the effectiveness of Ukraine’s military strategy in responding to relentless attacks. The heavy losses suffered by Russian forces demonstrate the strength of Ukraine’s defensive operations and the professionalism of its military. In the context of the ongoing conflict, successfully maintaining positions and preventing a defense breach will continue to shape the course of combat operations and the broader regional situation.
