Russian Comedian Receives Nearly Six-Year Sentence for Veteran Joke.
Artyom Ostanin's Sentence
According to TSN.ua: A Moscow court sentenced Russian stand-up comedian Artyom Ostanin to 5 years and 9 months in prison on February 4th for a joke about a legless veteran. The joke had provoked outrage among nationalist groups and military bloggers. The court also imposed a fine of 300,000 rubles, which is approximately $3,908.
Reaction to the Joke
The joke was delivered during a YouTube show called 'Stand-up in 60 Seconds.' Its publication sparked significant public anger, which led to the comedian's criminal prosecution. Ostanin attempted to leave Russia in March of last year but was detained in Belarus. He claims that during his arrest, he was subjected to violence, including being beaten and having his hair forcibly cut.
In his defense, Ostanin stated that his joke did not mention the 'special military operation.' The comedian expressed his dissatisfaction with the court's decision, declaring:
"To hell with your judicial practice."
This case has caused a broad public outcry and drawn attention to issues of free speech in Russia. It highlights the increasing pressure on freedom of expression in the country, particularly regarding commentary on military affairs. The prosecution of a comedian for a joke serves as a stark warning to other artists and commentators about the severe legal risks of addressing sensitive topics under current restrictions.
