Macron Discusses Deployment of Thousands of French Troops in Ukraine: Plan Details

According to ТСН: French President Emmanuel Macron held closed consultations at the Élysée Palace with representatives of parliamentary parties, discussing the possible deployment of French troops in Ukraine after a peace agreement with Russia is reached.

Consultations on Troop Deployment

In the meeting, in addition to Macron, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Chief of Staff Fabien Mandon, as well as leaders of parliamentary groups and heads of foreign affairs and defense committees participated.

Position of the French President

Macron emphasized that French troops 'will not be on the front lines' and will perform the functions of deterrence units to support the Ukrainian army. According to him, the deployment of troops will be part of security guarantees for Ukraine following a possible ceasefire and will occur with U.S. support. He also noted that these soldiers will not engage in combat.

Political Forces' Stance

Some political parties in France have expressed concerns about this initiative. In particular, representatives of the far left, far right, and communists do not support the deployment of troops without a UN mandate.

Information about Other Countries

Earlier, it was reported that German troops will be deployed only on NATO territory around Ukraine, a decision made by Chancellor Merz.

It was also revealed that Britain and France would limit their military presence in Ukraine to 15,000 troops, significantly lower than previous expectations and dependent on the conclusion of a peace agreement.

Reflecting on the possible deployment of troops, the French leadership aims to strengthen Ukraine's position on the international stage. This decision could be an important step in supporting Kyiv amid tensions and the potential restoration of peace in the region. However, the response of internal political forces indicates the ambiguity and complexity of this issue.
