U.S. intelligence agencies are closely tracking the storage sites of chemical weapons in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

According to The New York Times, intelligence operatives are watching for signs that forces supporting Assad are preparing to use banned weapons against rebel groups that opposed his regime.

Agencies assess that Assad's forces have limited stockpiles of chemical weapons, including sarin, a nerve agent.

The publication also reports that, according to human rights observers, the United States, and other countries, Assad's government has used chemical weapons, including nerve agents and chlorine gas. The use of such weapons has been observed against both rebels and his own people during 13 years of civil war.
