Romania records the lowest birth rate in a century.
Many villages in Romania face the problem of an aging population. Many city dwellers focus on their careers and postpone having children. This issue is reported by Euronews.
Since the early 1960s, the EU has seen a decline in birth rates. In 2024, Romania recorded the lowest birth rate in the last 100 years. Last year, fewer than 150,000 children were born there, marking the lowest figure in a century.
Due to the insufficient number of children, some schools and kindergartens have been forced to close. This is especially noticeable in the villages of Chilia and Brebu.
«There is no longer a school here. There is another school in the neighboring village, Valicha. Only two children from our village study there,» says Alexandru Petcă, former school principal in Brebu.
Romanian experts explain that these changes are a normal part of the modernization process and are not a cause for concern.
«I am not worried about this; similar changes are occurring in many European countries. Romania began its demographic modernization process several years ago,» notes sociologist Bogdan Voicu from the Romanian Academy.Statistics show that the municipalities facing the greatest birth rate problems are Tulcea, Caraș-Severin, Mehedinți, Covasna, Teleorman, and Giurgiu.
Almost 100 years ago, in 1930, Romania recorded over 480,000 births - those were completely different times.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on February 12. Earlier, opposition parties attempted to register impeachment proceedings against Iohannis. The politician held his position longer than expected due to the restart of the election procedure.
