How to Spot a Scam Call Disguised as a Legitimate Number

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine is currently experiencing a surge in fraudulent phone calls, where criminals disguise their numbers to appear as ordinary, local lines. Recognizing these scams is crucial for personal security when answering calls. This type of phone fraud is a growing global issue, making awareness key for everyone.

The international dialing code for Ukraine is +380. Scammers frequently use codes from real mobile operators to seem more convincing. For instance:

  • Kyivstar uses codes +380 67, 68, 96, 97, 98, 77;
  • Vodafone uses +380 50, 66, 95, 99, 75;
  • Lifecell uses +380 63, 73, 93.

Scammers also commonly spoof Kyiv landline numbers with the +380 44 code to deceive citizens.

The digits immediately following the '+' sign indicate the country of origin, which can help verify a call's legitimacy. However, caution is essential, especially with calls from short service numbers, which fraudsters can control. Common scenarios involving calls through messaging apps are also frequently exploited for manipulation and deceit.

Protecting Yourself from Phone Scams

Given the rise in these fraudulent schemes, Ukrainians must remain vigilant and cautious to avoid becoming victims.

As scammer activity intensifies, it is vital for the public to be informed about methods for protecting themselves from telephone fraud.

Correctly identifying suspicious calls can significantly reduce the risk of financial loss and personal data theft. Authorities and telecom operators must also implement measures to enhance security and keep the public informed about emerging fraudulent tactics.
