Ukrainian Forces Cripple Russian Frigate Admiral Essen, Neutralizing its Kalibr Missile Threat.
Strike on Novorossiysk on March 2
According to TSN.ua: In a joint operation on the night of March 2, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and Defense Forces inflicted critical damage on the Russian frigate Admiral Essen. The attack rendered the vessel incapable of launching its arsenal of Kalibr cruise missiles against Ukrainian territory. The Admiral Essen is a significant threat, typically armed with eight Kalibr missiles capable of striking cities and critical infrastructure deep within Ukraine. This operation demonstrates Ukraine's growing capability to project force against high-value Russian naval assets in the Black Sea.
The strike hit the frigate's midship superstructure, igniting a deck fire that burned for approximately 18 hours. The assault also damaged five other Russian military vessels. Additional assets destroyed in the operation included:
- An S-300 air defense radar system;
- A Pantsir-S2 anti-aircraft missile system;
- Six oil storage tanks.
Russian personnel casualties from the attack were three killed and sixteen wounded. These losses underscore the severity of the strike and its impact on Russian combat capabilities in the Black Sea region. The operation marks a significant step in enhancing Ukraine's security and degrading the threat posed by Russian military forces.
This successful attack highlights Ukraine's strategic efforts to defend itself amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Neutralizing the Admiral Essen and damaging other vessels could substantially hinder Russia's military activity in the Black Sea, limiting its capacity to launch missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. Such operations reflect the evolution of Ukrainian tactics in countering threats from a larger adversary.
