Dozens of Ukrainian Recruitment Attempts Uncovered by SBU: How Russian Intelligence Operates Undercover.
Russian Intelligence Activity in Ukraine
According to UATV: The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported a surge in attempts by Russian intelligence agencies to recruit Ukrainians by impersonating local law enforcement officials. Since the start of 2026, dozens of such cases have been identified, raising public concern.
Specifically, Russian operatives call or message individuals via messengers, posing as SBU officers, National Police members, or other law enforcement personnel. They obtain personal data using customer databases from online stores. Their methods include various forms of blackmail, such as threatening fabricated criminal charges. Additionally, the perpetrators demand money to close nonexistent criminal proceedings.
Threats to Ukrainians
Furthermore, Russian intelligence services are attempting to coerce Ukrainians into committing illegal acts, including arson attacks on administrative buildings and vehicles belonging to defense forces. In response, the SBU urges citizens to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when interacting with strangers who may exploit the situation for their own purposes.
This information highlights the growing activity of Russian intelligence in conducting information and psychological operations against Ukraine. Given the current situation in the country, it is crucial for citizens to stay alert and aware of potential threats arising from disinformation and manipulation. The SBU continues to work on detecting such incidents and protecting the public from possible risks.
