Ukraine's SBU Exposes Ternopil Recruitment Chiefs for Inflating Mobilization Figures in Reports.
Uncovered in Ternopil Region
According to Novyny.live: Three senior officials from a territorial recruitment center in the Ternopil region have been exposed by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR). They are suspected of padding their official reports with inflated numbers of conscripted individuals. As a result, they have been suspended from duty and could face up to six years in prison if convicted.
Investigators found that these officials falsified data for more than 70 draftees, entering false information into the electronic registry of mobilized persons. This case has raised serious concerns about systemic human rights violations within these institutions. Since the start of 2026, the Ombudsman's Office has received over three thousand complaints against staff at territorial recruitment centers. The complaints cite the use of force and balaclavas, further highlighting the scale of the problem.
Calls for Reform
By overstating the number of mobilized individuals in their reports, the recruitment chiefs caused significant harm to both draftees and society at large. Their actions are under investigation, and a guilty verdict would result in severe punishment. This situation underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms in the conscription process and the operation of territorial recruitment centers to prevent future abuses.
This incident reflects deeper issues within the mobilization system and the management of conscripts, which could have serious consequences for civil society. Given the numerous complaints and the violations uncovered, it is critical for the government and relevant authorities to take steps to enhance transparency and accountability in the work of territorial recruitment centers. Reforming this sector may be essential to restoring public trust in state institutions and safeguarding citizens' rights.
