Ukrainian Security Service Apprehends Belarusian KGB Operative Active Since 2015.
Belarusian Intelligence Agent Detained in Kyiv
According to TSN.ua: In a joint operation with the Internal Security Department of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has apprehended a Belarusian intelligence agent in Kyiv. The woman, who has been active in Ukraine since 2015, was attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian military intelligence structures. The multi-stage operation concluded with the suspect being formally charged with espionage.
The 35-year-old operative was dispatched from Minsk to work in Ukraine in 2020. She used journalism as a cover for her activities. After the media outlets she collaborated with were shut down, she was reassigned to continue her work within Ukraine. Following the full-scale invasion, she received new instructions from her KGB handler, which included gathering information on Belarusian and Russian citizens who support Ukraine. This case highlights the persistent threat of foreign intelligence operations, even amidst the ongoing war.
Legal Repercussions and Security Implications
The agent also attempted to secure a position within a staff unit of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate. The special operation was carried out under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General. For her actions, which legally constitute espionage, the woman faces up to 15 years of imprisonment.
This incident underscores the ongoing activity of Belarusian intelligence services in Ukraine during the current conflict. The arrest demonstrates the efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to counter external threats and protect national security. Such cases can significantly impact the already strained international relations between Ukraine and Belarus, as well as the broader regional security situation.
