Russia’s 2026 Military Target: 409,000 New Troops, Says Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief.
Battlefield Realities and Russia’s Recruitment Ambitions
According to UATV: Ukraine’s top military leader, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has cast doubt on Moscow’s plan to enlist 409,000 soldiers in 2026. He argues that heavy battlefield losses could derail these recruitment goals. Russia aims to boost its total troop presence in Ukraine to 800,000, but January and February figures show it has already fallen short of its replenishment targets.
Expert Analysis
Military analyst Denys Popovych noted that
“the Russian Federation intends to recruit 409,000 personnel this year.”However, given the current situation, these plans raise serious questions. He also emphasized that
“they continue to use prisoners,”indicating Russia still relies on convicts to fill its military ranks.
The front-line situation remains intense, and Russia’s ambitious force expansion may prove far more difficult to achieve than anticipated. Heavy personnel losses and the ongoing use of prisoners suggest the Kremlin is scrambling for alternative ways to replenish its forces. This could signal a deepening resource crisis, with potential ripple effects on future military operations in the region.
