New Warfare Challenges: The Rise of FPV Drones

According to TSN.ua: Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces, has detailed a significant new threat emerging from the battlefield: Russia's deployment of FPV drones guided via fiber-optic cable. This development presents a major challenge, as these drones are largely immune to traditional electronic warfare (EW) jamming, thereby increasing the danger to Ukrainian defensive positions.

Syrskyi noted that while Ukrainian forces pioneered the use of FPV drones, Russian forces have since caught up, matching and even surpassing them in both the quantity and quality of these unmanned systems. Russia has now fielded the jet-powered 'Geran-4' unmanned aerial vehicle, which can reach speeds of up to 500 km/h and is armed with an R-60 missile.

Technological Innovations Reshaping Battlefield Tactics

The Commander-in-Chief emphasized that the fiber-optic link remains crucial for protecting these drones from electronic countermeasures. The enemy's use of fiber-optic-guided FPV drones has effectively expanded the lethal 'kill zone' on the front lines. Syrskyi explained that neutralizing such drones is now a physical task, requiring their mechanical destruction, the use of anti-drone systems, or interceptor drones.

“The use of fiber-optic FPV drones underscores the evolution of modern warfare tactics, where technological innovation has become a decisive element in combat operations.” - Oleksandr Syrskyi

In light of these shifts in the strategic balance, Ukraine must urgently adapt its defensive and counter-drone methods to mitigate the risks posed by the adversary's advancing unmanned technology. The drone war has entered a new, more complex phase where control of the electromagnetic spectrum is no longer sufficient for defense.
