Slovakia Threatens to Cut Ukraine's Power Supply in Oil Transit Ultimatum.
Slovakia Issues a Threat to Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has threatened to halt electricity exports to Ukraine unless the transit of Russian oil is restored by February 23. Fico stated that if this demand is not met, he will order Slovak companies to stop supplying power to Ukraine.
'If the Ukrainian president does not restore oil supplies to Slovakia by Monday, I will order Slovak companies to stop supplying electricity to Ukraine on the same day.' Robert Fico
Fico emphasized that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes Slovakia's pressure over oil will bring Ukraine closer to the European Union, he is 'gravely mistaken'.
This ultimatum follows a Russian attack on January 27 that damaged a section of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline near Brody in the Lviv region, halting fuel transit to Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has also issued a similar ultimatum to Ukraine over the situation.
This dispute highlights the complex energy interdependencies in Central Europe, where infrastructure damage from the war creates ripple effects. In response to the crisis, the Slovak company Slovnaft has ordered seven oil tankers from Saudi Arabia, Norway, Kazakhstan, and Libya, signaling a push to secure alternative supplies.
Mounting Energy Tensions
The standoff underscores the growing strain in energy relations between Ukraine and its neighbors, exacerbated by the ongoing war. Restoring the flow of Russian oil could have significant implications not only for Slovakia's energy security but also for Ukraine's own precarious energy situation, which has already suffered major losses due to military actions. Slovakia's move to diversify its oil sources indicates the country's attempts to adapt to new realities, reflecting the serious challenges surrounding energy resources in the region.
