Slovakia and Hungary to Form Joint Commission for 'Druzhba' Pipeline Assessment.
The Druzhba Pipeline Situation
According to TSN.ua: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has confirmed plans to establish a joint Slovak-Hungarian commission to evaluate the condition of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. Fico stated the pipeline remains operational, despite the fact that oil deliveries through it were halted on January 27. This disruption forced both Slovakia and Hungary to seek alternative sources of crude oil. The Druzhba pipeline is a critical Soviet-era artery for transporting Russian oil across Ukraine to Central Europe.
The pipeline's shutdown has created significant difficulties for both nations. In response, the Slovak oil refinery Slovnaft has already taken steps to secure supplies, ordering seven tankers from various countries including Saudi Arabia, Norway, Kazakhstan, and Libya.
“The pipeline is not damaged, unless it gets damaged intentionally today, tomorrow, or the day after.” - Robert Fico
This statement underscores the pipeline's importance for Slovakia's energy security. Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has asserted that 'Kyiv halted the oil supplies for political reasons,' highlighting the complex geopolitical tensions underlying the situation.
Potential for Cooperation
The formation of the joint commission could be a crucial step for Slovakia and Hungary in addressing oil supply issues and restoring stability to their energy sectors. The Druzhba situation has implications beyond these two countries, affecting broader European energy security. The commission may help find a common solution to restore stable oil supplies, which is critically important amid ongoing energy market volatility. However, the political dimensions of the supply disruption remain a sensitive issue requiring careful negotiation among all involved parties.
