French tourist dies at waterfall in Thailand: fifth victim in recent years.
According to ТСН: French tourist Alexis Vergos became the latest victim of the Na Muang 2 waterfall on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand. While attempting to take a memorable photo with his girlfriend, he slipped on wet stones and fell from a height onto sharp boulders.
Circumstances of the Tragedy
The 22-year-old Vergos died, likely during a photoshoot with his girlfriend. The incident occurred on January 5, when they were near the Na Muang 2 waterfall. The young man slipped on the wet rocks and fell. His companion, Ms. Roman, also slipped but managed to grab onto a tree branch, which saved her life. She called for help from emergency services and descended on her own.
Volunteers were engaged in the search for the tourist, using special equipment to climb the waterfall. The operation lasted about three hours and ended tragically: Vergos's body was found wedged between large rocks.
“The tourist and his girlfriend arrived in Koh Samui on Sunday. He was photographing near the waterfall, slipped, fell into the water, hit the rocks, and died on the spot. His girlfriend was nearby and it was she who alerted the police. She is currently in a state of deep shock,” said police major Chayet Tulachetikul from the Koh Samui police department.
Previous Cases of Tourist Deaths
This accident is not the first at this waterfall, where tourists often underestimate the risks while trying to take impressive selfies. Earlier, another tourist from France died after ignoring warning signs.
Last year, a British serviceman sustained serious injuries, breaking his femur and skull while photographing near the waterfall. In 2019, a similar tragedy befell another Frenchman who tried to take a selfie and died from a fall.
“In recent months, additional warning signs in Thai and English have been installed in the area. Most tourists have adhered to the warnings, and until now, there have been no similar incidents. Now we will consider the possibility of enhancing safety measures - installing barriers or restricting access to dangerous areas,” said Koh Samui district head Amorn Chumchay.
This incident underscores once again the danger faced by tourists trying to take unforgettable photos in exotic locations. Unfortunately, in the pursuit of perfect shots, many forget about their own safety, which can lead to tragic consequences. Authorities urge tourists to be cautious and follow warning signs to avoid similar situations in the future.
