Why SOWA Stood by Ukrainian Music

According to TSN.ua: Before the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian singer SOWA turned down multiple collaboration offers from the Russian entertainment industry. She recently explained her decision to remain in Ukraine, emphasizing the growing importance of Ukrainian-language music and national identity in today’s reality. According to the artist, these proposals were not isolated incidents:

“It wasn’t just one offer—there were several,” SOWA stated.

Prior to 2022, many young performers saw the Russian market as a fast track to fame. But after Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, everything shifted. The war drew a very clear line, SOWA noted, and sparked a new demand for Ukrainian-language content—a development that is now fueling the growth of the country’s own music scene.

New Horizons for Ukrainian Artists

SOWA also highlighted the fresh opportunities emerging for Ukrainian musicians:

“We’re no longer looking for where to fit in—we’re building our own space,” she said.

This mindset reflects a broader transformation in Ukraine’s music industry, where artists are increasingly focused on creating original work rooted in their cultural heritage.

SOWA’s choice to stay in Ukraine and reject Russian show business partnerships illustrates a wider trend among Ukrainian performers committed to supporting national culture during wartime. The surging interest in Ukrainian-language content signals a shift in audience preferences and could lay the groundwork for the long-term growth of the country’s music sector. This movement involves not just producing new songs, but also reclaiming cultural identity in times of crisis.
