Incidents of Suicide Attempts by Conscripts

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine has reported cases of suicide attempts by conscripts at Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCCs). Based on available information, these unusual incidents have raised serious concerns, as detained conscripts may be sent to psychiatric clinics for treatment. Following treatment, their status is determined by military medical commissions.

One notable case involved a woman who sought legal help after her son attempted suicide at a TCC. While in custody, the young man cut his veins inside the facility.

Lawyer Vyacheslav Kyrdа noted that 'generally, after such an incident, he should be fully discharged. But it all depends on the diagnosis he receives at the hospital.'
This highlights that a decision to remove a conscript from military rolls after a suicide attempt can only be made based on specific medical findings.

Determination of Status Process

Furthermore, after treatment, the individual must undergo a new military medical commission to determine their future status. As lawyer Yuriy Ayvazyan explained,

'first and foremost, attention should be focused on the fact that the young man must undergo a repeat MMC, because the diagnosis alone, such as being classified as limited fit, does not provide anything.'
This underscores the importance of a repeat commission in assessing a conscript's fitness for military service.

According to Order No. 342 of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, some men were removed from military registration if they were deemed unfit during peacetime. However, the decision of the repeat military medical commission can vary, depending on the specific circumstances and the diagnosis established during treatment. Thus, the process of determining the status of conscripts after a suicide attempt is complex and requires thorough medical examination and evaluation.

This situation highlights the importance of mental health for conscripts in the context of military service, especially during armed conflicts. The growing number of suicide attempts may indicate a need for improved psychological support and access to medical services for service members. Proper assessment of their condition and timely assistance could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
