The USA is ready to recognize the occupation of Crimea: details of Trump's peace plan.
According to ТСН: The United States may recognize Russia's control over Crimea and other occupied territories of Ukraine in order to secure a peace agreement. This 'peace plan' raises concerns among Ukraine's European allies and could violate US diplomatic norms.
Trump's Plan and Direct Proposal to Putin
According to reports, Donald Trump sent his representatives to Moscow to make a direct proposal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The first draft of the peace plan, developed by Witkoff, contained 28 points, including 'de facto' recognition of Crimea and the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions by the USA. The strategy also provided for 'de facto' recognition of Russia's control over the territories in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions after signing a ceasefire agreement.
Shortly thereafter, Ukrainian and American officials met in Geneva and prepared a new 19-point plan, which is believed to be less favorable for Russia. However, many sources report that the US proposals to recognize the occupation remain part of the new strategy.
The 'Red Line' for Kyiv and Europe
Despite these American proposals, Kyiv is not obliged to recognize Russia's control over the illegally annexed territories, as Ukraine's Constitution prohibits any president or government from ceding territory without a national referendum.
Head of the President's Office Andriy Yermak and National Security Adviser Rustem Umerov are awaiting a meeting with American officials in Florida. Yermak emphasized that territorial concessions are a 'red line' for Ukraine:
'As long as Zelensky is president, no one should expect that we will give up territory. He will not give up territory. The Constitution prohibits this. No one can do this unless they want to go against the Constitution of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,'
Yermak stated.
The Washington proposal has raised concerns among European allies, who have repeatedly opposed a peace agreement that allows changes of borders by force. Coalition leaders stressed:
'This remains one of the fundamental principles of maintaining stability and peace in Europe and beyond,'
the coalition leaders stated, who deny recognition of the annexed territories.
Furthermore, Washington has kept the new peace plan secret even from the EU, as reported by Politico, noting that the USA has 'shut out' Europe from participating in the development of the document.
This development indicates serious upheavals in international relations, particularly regarding the Ukrainian crisis. If the USA goes ahead with recognizing Russian control, it could lead to significant changes in other countries' attitudes towards Ukraine and Russia, and also affect stability in the region. The situation remains tense, and further negotiations between the USA and Ukraine will be crucial for forming a response strategy to these challenges.
