Lubinets Reveals Updated Figures on Ukrainian Civilians in Russian Captivity

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, has disclosed the verified count of Ukrainian civilians currently detained by Russian forces. According to his statement, 1,978 verified Ukrainian civilians are now imprisoned in Russian facilities. Lubinets emphasized that the actual number of captives could be significantly higher.

'Why do I say verified? We have clear evidence that our citizens remain in Russian captivity as civilian hostages who have not been verified. We can only guess at their actual number,' Dmytro Lubinets

He also noted that Ukraine maintains a separate registry for civilians taken captive since 2014, reflecting the long-standing nature of this issue.

Lubinets further reported that the official register of missing persons now lists over 16,000 civilians. 'I gave you the number of verified individuals in Russian prisons. How many additional civilian hostages might be there, we can only speculate, but that figure is substantial,' he added.

For context, on June 26, 2023, 160 Ukrainian defenders were returned from Russian captivity. These figures highlight the ongoing urgency of efforts to secure the release of civilians facing dire conditions.

Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine Deepens

The plight of Ukrainian civilians held in Russian prisons remains a critical humanitarian concern. Given the large number of both verified and unverified hostages, Ukrainian authorities must intensify efforts to bring them home. This situation also underscores the need for sustained international support to address the rights and welfare of civilians affected by the conflict.

The challenges posed by the high number of missing persons demand a comprehensive strategy to locate them and provide assistance to their families.
