U.S. Envoy: No Peace Deal Until Ukrainians Feel Secure.
Ukraine-Russia Peace Agreement
According to TSN.ua: U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Whitkoff has stated that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia will not be approved until the Ukrainian people feel secure. Whitkoff stressed that without the trust of the Ukrainian people in the possibility of living in peace following a diplomatic settlement, reaching a deal will be impossible. He noted:
"There will be no agreement here if Ukraine and its people do not believe they can live in peace in the event of a diplomatic solution." - Steve Whitkoff
This stance underscores the U.S. position that a sustainable peace must be built on genuine security, not just political compromise. The American delegation is currently holding talks in Geneva. A fourth trilateral meeting between representatives from Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow is scheduled for next week. Whitkoff also stated that 'such a meeting of leaders is quite realistic,' which could open new possibilities for the peace process.
Geneva Negotiations
The focus remains on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The Geneva negotiations, within which discussions on security and potential paths to peace will take place, could become a significant stage in relations between the countries. Security for Ukraine remains the priority, and any further steps toward peace agreements will depend on the readiness of the Ukrainian people to believe in stability and safety.
Whitkoff's statements highlight the critical psychological dimension of peace talks, as achieving regional stability is unlikely without the population's proper sense of security. The upcoming trilateral meeting is expected to be an important step toward establishing dialogue between the parties and discussing mechanisms for ensuring peace, which, in turn, could positively influence relations between Ukraine and Russia.
