Why the US Denies Ukraine Security Assurances: Insights from Journalist Vitaliy Portnikov.
Ukraine Left Without Security Guarantees
According to TSN.ua: According to journalist Vitaliy Portnikov, Ukraine has not received any real security guarantees from the United States or NATO. He argues that Washington opposes Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance due to fears of escalating tensions with Russia. In Portnikov’s view, the so-called American security guarantees are nothing more than 'another phantom, a fabrication.'
Portnikov also recalled that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel repeatedly addressed this issue. In one notable instance, she stated:
'Vladimir, as long as I am Chancellor, Ukraine will not join NATO. Don’t worry, your security in no way depends on Ukraine. Leave Ukraine alone.' – Angela Merkel
These remarks underscore how limited Western support remains for integrating Ukraine into NATO, particularly from key allies.
US Denies Withdrawal Demand
Separately, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed claims that Ukraine was asked to pull its troops from Donbas in exchange for American security guarantees. On this point, Portnikov commented:
'That’s all nonsense. The real issue is that Trump doesn’t want Ukraine in NATO to avoid a direct clash with Russia.' – Vitaliy Portnikov
This lack of clear security commitments from the US and NATO remains a pressing concern for Ukraine, troubling experts and policymakers alike.
The situation highlights the complexity of regional geopolitics and Ukraine’s urgent need to explore alternative paths for national defense. As the conflict with Russia continues, Kyiv’s security dilemma will remain a central issue both domestically and internationally. The absence of firm guarantees could shape Ukraine’s strategies for cooperation with Western partners and influence its foreign policy direction amid ongoing challenges.
