The USA has no intentions of increasing military potential in Greenland.
The US Embassy in Copenhagen stated that the United States does not plan to increase its military presence in Greenland. This was announced by Donald Trump, who will take office on January 20. He emphasized that control over Greenland is important for the US and did not rule out the use of military or economic measures, such as tariffs against Denmark.
Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, is the largest island in the world. Its 57,000 residents have autonomy in internal affairs. According to a Reuters spokesperson, the US will not increase its military presence in Greenland, but will continue cooperation with Copenhagen and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, to ensure security.
The US already has a permanent military base in northern Greenland, which is important for the early warning system for ballistic missiles. This island is the shortest route from Europe to North America.
According to analyst Jens Wenzel from Nordic Defence Analysis, the US is concerned about the possibility that Russia could initiate an attack on the US from Greenland. The space of Greenland is unguarded and Russia could use it for its own purposes.
