The territory of Ukraine is starting a summer-autumn ban on catching crayfish, which is necessary for the preservation of the population of these aquatic creatures during their molting period. The ban covers most of the water bodies of the country, and penalties and even criminal liability are provided for violations of this restriction.

Where and when the ban will take effect

The ban will be in effect throughout most of Ukraine from August 15 to September 30. Only in some water bodies of Mykolaiv, Kherson regions, and the Dnipro-Buh river mouth system will it start earlier, from August 10, and last until September 20.

The State Fisheries Agency also noted that in Transcarpathia there are permanent restrictions on catching crayfish, as there are crayfish that are threatened with extinction.

How violators will be punished

For catching crayfish during this period, various sanctions are established - from administrative penalties to criminal liability, as well as compensation for damages to fisheries.

The fine for one illegally caught crayfish is 3,332 UAH. The agency reminds that crayfish play an important role in the aquatic ecosystem, serving as 'sanitarians' in water bodies.

The State Fisheries Agency urges fishermen to treat crayfish responsibly and adhere to the established restrictions during fishing.
