Penalty points for drivers will be introduced in Ukraine: What to expect for violators.

According to inkorr.com: Ukraine plans to introduce a system of penalty points for drivers based on European models. This information by Volodymyr Kreidenko, the deputy chairman of the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure of the Verkhovna Rada.

Penalty points system for drivers in Ukraine

The innovation aims to discipline drivers and prevent violations of traffic rules. The essence of the project is that drivers receive penalty points for each traffic violation, which accumulate in their user account.

'The philosophy of this system is that people understand: if they regularly violate the rules - exceed speed limits, park incorrectly or create dangerous situations - they accumulate penalty points. If these points become too many, it may even lead to a ', explained the deputy.

Solving the problem of traffic violations

Kreidenko pointed out that currently in Ukraine there is no real responsibility for drivers who constantly ignore traffic rules. The existing laws do not provide an effective mechanism to prevent such violations.

'There are so-called speeders or “majors” who receive dozens of fines daily but continue to speed and create danger for themselves and others. The law does not provide a mechanism that actually restricts such individuals', the parliamentarian added.

The basic principles of the penalty points system:

• For each traffic violation, the driver receives a certain number of penalty points, depending on the severity of the offense;

• The points are accumulated and stored in a database for a certain period;

• Upon reaching a critical number of points, the driver may temporarily or permanently lose the right to drive a vehicle;

• The system motivates compliance with the rules, as repeated violations can lead to serious consequences.

A similar system has already been successfully implemented in EU countries. There, drivers who frequently violate traffic rules risk not only paying fines but also temporarily losing their driving licenses. This significantly increases discipline on the roads and reduces the number of traffic accidents.

Deadlines for the introduction of the new fine system

Currently, specific deadlines for the introduction of the system and the details of its operation have not been set. The bill needs to go through the Verkhovna Rada and gain the support of the deputies. After the adoption of the law, time will be needed to create the technical infrastructure and inform drivers about the new rules.

The introduction of the penalty points system will be an important step towards modernizing traffic regulations in Ukraine. If the bill is supported, it may positively affect driver behavior and reduce the number of violations, which in turn will increase safety on the roads.
