New Penalties for Unauthorized Use of Military Attire

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine has implemented a system of fines targeting civilians who wear military uniforms without authorization. These fines, which could reach 6,800 hryvnias by 2026, stem from a 2019 law establishing administrative and criminal liability for the illegal use of military gear. This measure is part of broader efforts to maintain order and security during wartime.

Violation Rules and Consequences

Under the new regulations, a first offense will result in either a warning or a fine ranging from 2,550 to 3,400 hryvnias. If the same individual commits a repeat violation within a year, the penalty increases to a fine of 3,400 to 6,800 hryvnias. Offenders may also be sentenced to 30-40 hours of community service.

The law strictly limits uniform-wearing privileges to specific authorized groups:

  • Active-duty military personnel
  • Cadets
  • Reservists
  • Individuals subject to military service obligations
  • Students of military lyceums
  • Retirees who retain the right to wear uniforms

These restrictions aim to prevent misuse and ensure clear identification in a conflict environment, where impersonation poses serious risks.

The introduction of these fines reflects the Ukrainian government's push to strengthen legal order and security during military operations. By imposing significant financial penalties, authorities seek to deter potential abuses, uphold military discipline, and reinforce public trust in official armed formations. In the current context, such measures are viewed as a critical step in preventing dangerous impersonations and maintaining societal stability.
