A Secret 1970s Metro Plan for Chernihiv, Designed by Students.
Students in the 1970s Designed a Metro System for Chernihiv
According to Novyny.live: Inspired by the Kyiv Metro, a symbol of modern transport in Ukraine, a group of Chernihiv students in the 1970s created a detailed plan for a subway in their own city. Their ambitious project, initially slated for realization by 2022, demonstrated the younger generation's drive to modernize their hometown's infrastructure. This was a bold vision for a city that, at the time, had a population well under 300,000.
Historian Andriy Kurdanov has detailed the project, noting that it included proposed stations at the Val and near the river port. These locations were strategically chosen to provide convenient access to the city's main transport arteries. While the plan never advanced beyond the conceptual stage, it stands as a testament to the forward-thinking ideas of its young creators.
A Symbol of Aspirations for Modern Transit
This student concept for Chernihiv became a symbol of the dream for modern transport and infrastructure among the city's residents. It is interesting to note that Ukraine's second metro system opened in Kryvyi Rih in 1986, showing the gradual development of such networks across the country. The unrealized Chernihiv metro left a lasting impression on those who sought to improve their city.
The Chernihiv metro project underscores the desire of the younger generation to influence urban development and infrastructure, even during a time when such ambitions were more aspirational than practical.

Today, the need to modernize transport systems is increasingly relevant, given the growing demands of cities and their populations. Ideas like this student proposal can serve as a foundation for future initiatives aimed at improving transport accessibility and quality of life in Ukraine's regions.
