Ukrainians are saying goodbye to Father Frost: who will bring gifts now

According to ТСН: In Ukrainian society, there is an active refusal of Soviet symbols, including Father Frost. However, among parents, there are still disagreements regarding who should actually give gifts to children. This topic has sparked lively discussions on social media.

The initiator of the discussion was a user with the nickname ola_comics on the social media platform Threads.

"There won't be any established Tradition for my children, it seems. Because I got confused in recent years. What about you? What have you decided?"

User comments revealed a significant divide in attitudes towards the celebration. Many express negative views about Father Frost, saying that this character was imposed and does not correspond to Ukrainian traditions. At the same time, there are those who consider Father Frost a "neutral, non-political, and timeless" symbol of winter, rather than a religious figure. The majority agrees that the main holiday for receiving gifts is St. Nicholas Day (December 6).

"I don't quite understand what doubts there can be about 'father frost'... I thought this issue had already been settled... in Ukraine, gifts are given to children on St. Nicholas Day (now December 6)"

Those parents who decided to reject the Soviet character are introducing new, sometimes combined traditions:

  1. St. Nicholas (December 6) - brings the biggest gift under the pillow.

  2. Santa Claus (December 25) - visits those who celebrate Christmas according to the western rite. Some give books or receive gifts from godparents on this day.

  3. New Year (December 31/January 1) - in many families, gifts are simply given 'from the parents' or neutral characters like Snowman or Elf.

Several users approached the topic with humor, suggesting an original 'patriotic' character:

"On the night of December 31 to January 1, Stepan Andriyovych Bandera could come to children and leave patriotic gifts)))) I'm joking just in case"

Some parents prefer not to deceive their children and simply give gifts personally from themselves and other relatives.

"Decided not to deceive the child with lies about Santa or Nicholas. All gifts are from us (the parents) or other relatives. At the same time, we do not hide the legend of Santa/Nicholas coming to children during the holidays; we just explain it as a fairy tale"

Every child eagerly waits for the magical day when an inexpensive gift will be found under the pillow on St. Nicholas Day, which will bring joy and a festive mood. A fairy-tale world is also being created at VDNH - from the Northern Express with an audio tour to the Christmas dream factory, where elves help to make Christmas tree decorations. The complex will open 20 themed locations so that everyone can feel the atmosphere of the New Year.
