Roberta Metsola is a Maltese politician who has been serving as the President of the European Parliament since January 18, 2022.
Roberta Metsola was born on January 18, 1979, in the city of Saint Julian's in Malta. She grew up in the coastal town of Gzira in Malta. Roberta Metsola is a lawyer specializing in European law and politics. She studied European law at the College of Europe in Bruges.
In 2002, Roberta was appointed Secretary-General of the European Democratic Students' Organisation. From 2012 to 2013, she was legal advisor to the EU's foreign affairs representative, Catherine Ashton. Since 2013, she has been a Member of the European Parliament from Malta. In November 2020, Metsola was elected the first Vice-President of the European Parliament.
Family
Roberta Metsola is married to Ugo Metsola, a Finn. They got married on October 1, 2005. Roberta and her husband ran for the European elections in 2009 and became the first married couple to run in the same European elections from two different member states. The couple has four sons: Luca, Alec, Mark, and Christian.
In 2022, Roberta Metsola was elected President of the European Parliament with 458 votes
