EU Must Move Faster on Sanctions, Targeting Russia's Shadow Fleet, Says European Parliament.
European Parliament Calls for Urgent EU Action
According to UATV: The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has urged the European Union to accelerate its response by imposing sanctions on Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet'. She stressed that it is unacceptable for European countries to fund Russia's war against Ukraine through their purchases of Russian oil and gas. This call comes as Western sanctions have forced Russia to rely on a network of older, often poorly maintained tankers to circumvent restrictions on its energy exports.
Metsola emphasized that any opportunity for Russia to continue its war against Ukraine is intolerable. She pointed out that vessels in this shadow fleet rapidly change flags and re-register through illicit means, making it extremely difficult to monitor and control their activities.
These actions underscore the urgent need for the EU to respond swiftly to prevent further financing of the aggression and to support Ukraine in its fight for independence.
Sanction Efficacy and International Unity
Roberta Metsola's call for faster EU action reflects growing concern over the effectiveness of existing sanctions and their impact on the Russian economy. As the war continues, it is vital for the international community to remain united in its efforts against the aggressor, since funding the war through energy purchases could have serious consequences for regional stability.
The development of new control mechanisms and sanctions is crucial for supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.
