EU Freezes €16 Billion for Hungary Over Its Blockade of Aid to Ukraine.
Hungary’s Loan Plan Hits a Roadblock
According to TSN.ua: The European Union has delayed approving a loan package worth over €16 billion for Hungary, citing the stance of Viktor Orbán’s government. Budapest is currently blocking a €90 billion financial aid package for Ukraine, which has prompted the EU to hold off on finalizing Hungary’s own credit arrangement.
On March 19, Hungary and Slovakia jointly prevented the disbursement of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine, which the EU had planned to provide between 2026 and 2028. This move has raised alarms among European diplomats, who argue that
“Budapest is violating the principle of loyal cooperation,”highlighting the critical need for solidarity within the bloc.
Political Frictions and Their Fallout
In addition, Hungary continues to stall the adoption of the 20th sanctions package against Russia, further unsettling EU member states. As Roberta Metsola has pointed out, support for Ukraine is
“a security policy, not charity,”underscoring that financial assistance is vital for regional stability and defense.
The hold-up in Hungary’s loan approval, combined with its obstruction of aid to Ukraine, reveals deep political divisions within the European Union. These tensions could have adverse effects not only on Ukraine’s economic situation but also on the broader security framework in the region, which relies on European unity in confronting external threats. The current standoff calls for urgent efforts to restore constructive dialogue among EU members, aiming to prevent further escalation of discord.
