EU Ambassadors' Conference Focuses on Aid for Ukraine

According to UATV: At the annual conference of EU ambassadors held on March 9, discussions centered on supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the EU's commitment to provide a €90 billion loan to Ukraine. She stated that

"Ukraine's most urgent need right now is reliable financial backing. This is precisely why we have proposed a €90 billion loan to fund the country's essential requirements."

While the decision to grant the loan has been made, final technical approvals are still pending. A significant obstacle is Hungary's position, which is blocking agreement on a specific EU budget-related technical issue. This unresolved matter complicates the loan's implementation, highlighting ongoing internal EU debates over support for Kyiv.

Discussions on Potential Negotiations with Moscow

The conference also addressed the prospect of future negotiations with Moscow. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas remarked that

"Russia's maximalist demands cannot be met with a minimalist response. That is simply common sense. If the size of the Ukrainian army is to be limited, then Russia must also face limitations."
These comments underscore the importance of a firm and unified European stance in any future diplomatic talks.

Simultaneously, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola affirmed that 'Ukraine knows it can count on Europe as it continues to fight with immense courage and pride.' Such statements reflect the strong institutional support for Ukraine within the EU, which remains prepared to assist amid the ongoing conflict.

A meeting of EU economic and finance ministers is scheduled for tomorrow in Brussels, which may advance discussions on financial aid for Ukraine and other regional concerns.

This conference demonstrates the EU's intensified efforts to support Ukraine during the prolonged war. The financial aid package is crucial not only for Ukraine's stability but also for Europe's broader security. The difficulties in finalizing the loan, particularly Hungary's stance, could impact the speed and effectiveness of this assistance, emphasizing the need for EU unity on foreign policy. Meanwhile, the expressed views on future negotiations with Russia indicate Europe's readiness to assert its interests and conditions in the context of any potential peace settlement. The EU's support comes as Ukraine faces a critical phase in its defense against the invasion.
