Taiwanese Woman Sentenced to Prison for Harassing Neighbors with Loudspeaker at Night.
Court Ruling Against Chen in Taiwan
According to TSN.ua: A Taiwanese woman surnamed Chen has received a three-month prison sentence for repeatedly harassing her neighbors at night using a loudspeaker. The court found her guilty of using the loudspeaker to verbally abuse neighbors, a pattern of behavior that began in May 2023. These incidents occurred for several dozen minutes at a time, at least three times per week. Taiwan's legal system, which is distinct from mainland China's, handles such neighborhood disputes under its own criminal and civil codes.
After nearly two years of unsuccessful attempts to resolve the situation amicably, the affected neighbors filed a collective complaint with the police. The court's verdict stipulates that the prison term can be commuted to a fine of 90,000 New Taiwan dollars, which is roughly equivalent to 3,600 US dollars. This ruling is the result of prolonged conflicts in the residential area that could not be settled through peaceful means.
The Importance of Good Neighborly Relations
This case underscores the critical importance of maintaining good relations in residential communities and the legal liability for disturbing the peace of other residents. The court's decision may serve as a warning to others who might consider using similar aggressive tactics to handle disputes. While this incident occurred in Taiwan, issues of noise pollution and neighbor harassment are common challenges in urban areas worldwide, often requiring legal intervention to resolve.
