The American South Dominates Culture: How Film, Music, and Business Have Moved South.
The Rise of Students in the Southern US
According to Vox: Every September, a multitude of students migrates to the Southern US like migratory birds. Large state universities with a developed football culture, such as the University of Alabama and the University of Mississippi, report an increase in the number of students from the North. From 2018 to 2022, the number of young people leaving the North for schooling in the South increased by 30 percent.
There are many reasons for this phenomenon. It includes the opportunity for an interesting student experience and the fact that southern universities lifted Covid-related restrictions earlier compared to the North. A change of scenery also plays a role. Many students find more opportunities in the South at a more accessible price for education, as tuition costs have reached record highs. Whether it's #RushTok or a reduction in student loan debt, students increasingly choose life in the South, beyond the Mason-Dixon Line.
The Evolution of Perceptions of the South
According to a report by Bloomberg senior journalist Amanda Mull, this is just one manifestation of changing perceptions of Southern culture. She analyzes these transformations in a new episode of the Vox podcast Explain It to Me.
“Over time, the South has grown in the American imagination. What initially made this possible?”
In the 1960s, powerful political, logistical, and technological changes occurred. The political aspect is tied to the civil rights movement and the Civil Rights Act, which opened new political opportunities for many in the South. This also changed the perception of the South by other regions of the country.
Additionally, a practical shift occurred with the advent of air conditioning. In 1956, the highway construction program connected different parts of the country that had previously been difficult to traverse. The South remained less developed compared to the Northeast and the Midwest. With the introduction of the highway system, it became much easier to interact with other regions.
Business Advantages in the South
States began offering incentives to attract businesses. One example was promoting the South as an alternative for automotive manufacturing. This is particularly significant in the context of attracting foreign car companies. In recent decades, American car manufacturers have moved their production to the South to avoid certain logistical issues.
The automotive and film industries demonstrate how this strategy works across different sectors. Georgia and Louisiana have implemented significant tax incentives to attract television show and film productions.
The Cultural Influence of the South on Music
The rise of Southern hip-hop and the development of country music are occurring simultaneously. Changes in the popularity of country music can be viewed as a response to the massive influence of Black Southern creativity, especially in music.
“When you look at artists like Morgan Wallen, who is incredibly popular, it's hard not to notice that this may be partially a reaction to the dominance of Black music.”
Performances by progressive artists like Kacey Musgraves and Brandi Carlile prove that there is diversity in Southern music. Even Beyoncé, with her album Cowboy Carter, is reinterpreting her heritage, touching on some traditional stereotypes of Southern music.
The Emotions of Southerners Amid New Trends
“I have mixed feelings about this. I think it's good for all Southerners if people start to see the South as a legitimate part of the country.”
However, this also brings some discomfort. Many Southerners grapple with the history of their region, which may be overlooked by others. Therefore, it is strange to observe how people perceive Southern aesthetics without understanding its depth.
Thus, the growing interest in the South reveals not only its economic and cultural changes but also a complex historical legacy. Today, students, businesses, and artists are discovering new opportunities in this region, shaping its modern image within American society.
