Ukraine's Eurovision Host Criticizes Judge's Remarks, Vows to Reform National Selection Process.
Host's Concern Over Judge's Commentary During Competition
According to TSN.ua: Timur Miroshnychenko, the host of Ukraine's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, has publicly criticized comments made by judge Ruslana during the event, calling them unacceptable. Ruslana, the winner of Eurovision 2004, offered commentary on the performances of contestants, including finalists Lelеka and the runner-up, LAUD. Miroshnychenko expressed concern that such remarks from a jury member could unduly influence the public televote, which is a cornerstone of the contest's format.
Proposed Overhaul of the Selection Format
In response to this incident, Miroshnychenko plans to push for changes to the national selection's structure. He stated in a comment:
"I consider this to be unacceptable."He further emphasized his intention to advocate that judges' commentary should only be aired after the public vote has concluded:
"I will advocate for that 1% (of judges' comments) to come only after the public voting has finished."
The competition is organized by the public broadcaster "Suspilne," which has overseen a national selection process that has sparked some controversy this year. Miroshnychenko will continue working to refine the contest's format to ensure greater transparency and fairness in the voting procedure. The Eurovision Song Contest is a major cultural event in Ukraine, and its national selection is closely followed by millions.
This situation highlights the critical need for transparency in the national selection's voting process, as judges' comments can sway public opinion and, consequently, the final results. Miroshnychenko's initiative to reform the format could be a significant step toward rebuilding trust in the competition, which in turn may affect the quality of Ukraine's future entries in the international contest.
