Transcarpathia: 7-year-old boy with disabilities dies of exhaustion at a rehabilitation center.
Tragedy in Transcarpathia
According to ТСН: In Transcarpathia, law enforcement is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 7-year-old child in a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities. As part of the criminal proceedings, the pediatrician of the institution and the boy's mother have been charged, as her actions previously led to the child's removal from the family.
According to the investigation, the boy suffered from serious health problems and required adherence to a special diet.
“Doctors emphasized the life-saving gluten-free and lactose-free diets,”- the prosecutor's office reports.
It is quite possible that the tragedy could have been prevented had the staff of the institution reacted in time to the patient's condition. The child's condition worsened during his stay in the institution, and at the time of death, his weight was only 11 kilograms.
“The investigation established that during the sharp deterioration of the health condition, the doctor of the center did not ensure timely access to proper medical assistance,”- the law enforcement agencies stated.
According to information, prior to being placed in the center, the boy received inadequate care at home, and social services removed him from the family due to his mother's neglect of the doctors' recommendations. Before the tragedy, international volunteers attempted to organize treatment for the child abroad, but the boy died before transportation.
According to the prosecutor's office, the pediatrician is accused of improper performance of duties that led to the child's death, while the mother is charged with gross negligence of her duties of care for the child. The investigation continues to identify all individuals whose actions could have influenced the fatal outcome.
Similar Cases
It is worth noting that in the Vinnytsia region, a 10-year-old boy with disabilities died of hunger. He did not receive food for at least two months.
It also became known that the mother of the 10-year-old boy who died from hunger did not abuse alcohol and did not use banned substances. She had a third-degree disability and was unable to care for her son.
These tragedies expose systemic issues in the availability of proper care for vulnerable children. The public and law enforcement must monitor the situation in institutions for people with disabilities more closely to prevent similar cases in the future. Legislative changes and increased oversight may be critically important steps to protect those in need of support and help.
