Trump commented on the attack on Putin's residence: what is known about the incident.
According to ТСН: At the beginning of this week, one of the hottest news stories was Russia's accusation that Ukrainian drones allegedly 'attacked' Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai, Novgorod region.
This was reported by Sky News.
Trump's Statement
US President Donald Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago that he has information about this incident, which, according to him, came directly from Putin.
“Do you know who told me about this? President Putin told me about this. Early this morning he said he was attacked. This is not good,”
he noted, adding that he was 'very angry' about it.
Trump emphasized that he 'does not like this' as 'this is not good'. He also reminded that he stopped supplying Ukraine with long-range 'Tomahawk' missiles.
“This is a delicate period. Now is not the right time. It is one thing to be offensive — because they [Russia] are offensive — and another thing to attack his residence,”
the US president stated.
When asked about evidence from American intelligence regarding the 'attack', Trump acknowledged that 'perhaps', according to Russia's version, this actually did not happen.
“President Putin told me this morning that it did,”
he added.
Doubts about the Reality of the Attack
Sky News correspondent Mark Stone believes that Trump perceives Putin's words as the truth when it comes to this 'attack'. This is not the first time he has made such statements.
According to him, Trump spoke with Putin twice — before and after his conversation with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. The comments after the second conversation particularly caught attention when Trump reported that the Russian dictator told him about the 'attack'.
Zelensky rejected these statements, emphasizing that they are an attempt to disrupt the peace process. Trump's tone indicated trust in Putin.
“Remember that during his first term Trump believed Putin's words more than the words of his own intelligence agencies,”
the article notes.
Political Situation in the USA
Sky News notes that 2026 is an election year for Trump, as the midterm elections will take place in November. He needs to focus on domestic issues — the economy and the cost of living, rather than on external conflicts.
“Trump knows this. But so do America's opponents and its problematic allies. What will they bet on in 2026, knowing that he may not care, or he might just agree to it. Buckle up,”
the publication concludes.
Reaction from Russia
Recall that on December 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke about the alleged 'attack' on Putin's residence in the Novgorod region. After that, the Kremlin threatened to respond to the 'attack'. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that they know 'how, what, and when to respond' to this.
Meanwhile, residents of Valdai, the closest city to the 'Führer's' residence, noted that they did not notice any signs of fighting on the night of December 29. Journalists from The Moscow Times spoke to 14 residents, all of whom confirmed that they did not hear any characteristic sounds of drones or explosions that night.
These events and statements from both the USA and Russia indicate a complicated and tense international atmosphere. The US response to the accusations from Russia of an 'attack' could influence the further development of the conflict and the negotiation strategy. It also highlights how crucial communication between world leaders is during this sensitive period.
