Trump and Putin to Meet in Alaska: What to Expect from the Negotiations on the War in Ukraine.
This Friday, August 15, U.S. President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin will hold a meeting in Alaska. However, this meeting is not a victory for Russia and should not be seen as a concession to Moscow.
What Rubio Said About the Trump-Putin Meeting
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the meeting of the two leaders will be introductory in nature, during which Trump intends to give his own assessment of the situation while looking Putin in the eye. He noted that the U.S. president did not achieve the desired results during phone conversations with Putin and therefore decided to meet with the Kremlin chief in person.
'For President Trump, the meeting is not a concession. The meeting is what you do to clarify positions and make decisions. I want to have all the facts. I want to look this person in the eye.' And that is exactly what the president wants to do,' Rubio stated.
Rubio also emphasized that Trump has a reputation as 'an exceptional dealmaker' and an incredible negotiator, especially effective in personal communication.
At the same time, Rubio acknowledges that the negotiations may be complicated since for Putin the war in Ukraine is 'very important.'
The meeting between Trump and Putin will take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska. The purpose of the meeting is to better understand how to end the war in Ukraine.
The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska has captivated the global community. For the first time in a long while, such personal communication may prove key to resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine, but the directions of the negotiations and their outcomes remain mysterious for now.
