Trump announces special representative's visit to Russia: when the meeting will take place.
US President Donald Trump announced that his special representative Steve Witkoff may visit Russia as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. Earlier, there was information that the visit was supposed to take place last weekend.
What Trump said about Witkoff's visit to Moscow
During communication with the press, Trump was asked if he could update the information about Witkoff's visit and what would happen on Friday (the last day of the deadline for Russia regarding the war in Ukraine).
'Oh, there will be sanctions, but they seem to be quite good at circumventing them. You know, they are tricky guys, and they are doing pretty well at getting around sanctions, so we'll see what happens,'
Commenting on Witkoff, the US president noted that the special representative is currently focused on the situation in Gaza and ensuring people have food. As for the visit to Russia, it may take place in 3-4 days (August 6 or 7).
'Perhaps next week (it is still Sunday in the US), on Wednesday or Thursday, he will go to Russia. They want to see him. They asked for a meeting, so we'll see what comes of it,'
He also clarified that Witkoff's message would be to stop the killings.
'We have stopped many wars, (and the war in Ukraine - Ed.) should be the easiest to stop, but it is not,'
Let us remind you that on July 31, US President already announced Witkoff's visit to Moscow. Then he said that the special representative would be in Russia after a trip to Israel.
On August 2, the US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Vitaker clarified that the trip would happen 'this weekend'. However, as it has now become known — that's not quite the case.
President Trump updated the information about the possible visit of his special representative to Russia, previously announced. He noted that Witkoff is expected to take effective steps in the context of the conflict in Ukraine and the deterioration of relations with Russia.
