Trump may intensify pressure on Russia due to the US elections: FREEДOM overview.
According to FREEДOM: US President Donald Trump demonstrates relentless fluctuation regarding further actions against Russia, notes Alexander Leonov, executive director of the Center for Applied Political Research "Penta". He points out that Trump has repeatedly stated possible harsh measures against the Kremlin if there is no progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, but so far has taken no specific decisions.
'In Alaska, Putin managed to convince Donald Trump to significantly change his attitude. The main achievement for Russia is that Trump decided not to demand a complete and unconditional ceasefire. First, a truce, then negotiations,' said the expert.
It is noted that Putin expressed willingness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and also discussed a possible meeting in trilateral and bilateral formats with Trump. However, he later decided to avoid such negotiations.
'After the meeting with Trump, Putin abandoned the idea of such negotiations, which indicates a change in Russia's position. The Kremlin does not like the prospect of providing Ukraine with security guarantees, and they have started to retreat from their promises,' explained Leonov.
The expert considers a meeting between Zelensky and Putin unlikely before the end of August. At the same time, he believes that closer to autumn, Trump will have to take action to intensify pressure on Russia, as this request is supported both by political elites and US voters.
