Tusk: Russia is losing the arms race with Europe, just as the USSR lost to the West.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claims that the Russian Federation is losing the arms race with Europe, just as the Soviet Union lost to it 40 years ago.
Tusk made this statement before the start of an emergency EU Council summit in Brussels.
'Russia is losing this arms race with Europe, just as the USSR lost the arms race to the West 40 years ago,' Tusk emphasized.
According to him, the war in Ukraine, changes in U.S. policy, and the increase in Russian military forces create 'new challenges' for Europe that must be addressed. Tusk is confident that 'the time of truth has come,' when Europe must take greater responsibility for its security.
'Europe as a united community can defeat any confrontation with Russia - financial, economic, or military, since the EU is stronger. We just need to start believing in this, and it is happening today,' Tusk emphasized.
Tusk also expressed the opinion that Hungary and Slovakia may have a different stance regarding the security situation in Europe and aid to Ukraine. However, he stressed that European leaders will 'seek solutions that will guarantee the achievement of planned goals, even if Hungary is against it.' He stated that there have already been cases where 'the unwillingness of one country will not be able to block joint decisions.'
The Polish Prime Minister reported that the outcome of this summit should be the allocation of 150 billion euros for armament and security, including for the 'Eastern Shield' project to protect Poland's eastern border from Belarus and Russia.
It is planned that the EU, with the help of the ReArm Europe credit program amounting to 800 billion euros, will be able to update Europe's armament and help Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.
