Botswana Unveils Africa's First Monument to Taras Shevchenko.
Monument to Taras Shevchenko Erected in Botswana
According to UATV: On March 9, 2023, the Republic of Botswana became home to the first monument dedicated to Taras Shevchenko on the African continent. This event marks a significant milestone for the Ukrainian diaspora and for cultural ties between Ukraine and Africa. The statue is situated at the University of Botswana, highlighting the role of education and culture in preserving the legacy of the renowned Ukrainian poet and artist. Shevchenko is a foundational figure in Ukrainian literature, often called the 'bard' of the nation.
The installation of this monument is a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange between peoples, as well as an honor to Shevchenko's heritage. Globally, there are now 1,384 monuments to Taras Shevchenko, with 128 of them located across 35 different countries, a testament to the international recognition of his creative work and influence.
Commenting on the event, Andriy Sybiga noted: 'The first Kobzar on African soil.'
